Is Massage Different During Pregnancy?
PREGNANCY MASSAGE FAQS
IS PRENATAL MASSAGE SAFE? In most cases absolutely. Some people prefer to wait until they are out of the first trimester, however current research shows that massage is safe throughout pregnancy.
WHAT IS DIFFERENT IN THIS TYPE OF MASSAGE? Prenatal/pregnancy massage requires advanced training. As the pregnancy body changes, massages adapt to support pain relief and alleviate discomfort. As pregnancy progresses in the third trimester treatments focus on stress and pain relief, especially as the body produces more relaxin and ligaments become more lax.
Massage are recieved in side lying (like how the client is likely sleeping at home) or using the body cushion system to allow client to be face down/prone. When clients are face up they are giving additional pillows and bolsters behind them to ensure ease of breathing and comfort with reflux and other symptoms.
WHEN SHOULD I NOT RECEIVE A MASSAGE WHILE PREGNANT? If you’re experiencing complications related to your pregnancy, it is advised to receive consent from your healthcare provider before getting massage. Getting a massage while actively nauseous is no fun.
WHAT PREGNANCY SYMPTOMS CAN MASSAGE HELP WITH? Stress, fatigue, musculoskeletal pain from changing posture and weight distribution, and headaches are primarily addressed with massage therapy.

“I had an absolutely heavenly prenatal massage by Mary. I am 32 weeks pregnant, and understandably everything aches at this point. She focused on the areas I told her were bothering me the most, and yet still made time for my lesser pains. She made sure I was comfortable with the temperature of the table, and with my large baby belly. I’m certain she even put my little baby to sleep during the massage. I will be going back to see Mary again! She is highly recommended!”
